Fateh Sagar Lake in Udaipur, Rajasthan

There are several picturesque lakes in the City of Lakes – Udaipur. But, there is one lake that sparkles, attracting several tourists from around the world – Fateh Sagar Lake. It is the largest man – made lake in Rajasthan. Fateh Sagar Lake was first hollowed out by Maharana Jai Singh and is linked to the famous Lake Pichola by a canal.

This construction was later re-furbished by Maharana Fateh Singh. It is a famous tourist destination & there are international events and interesting activities held here each year. Guests of the Palace on Wheels get to visit this peaceful tourist spot.

Set in the backdrop of the amazing Aravalli Hills towards the north western region of Udaipur, there are 3 islands in the lake water. A complete solar observatory is built on top of another island whereas the largest one is a beautiful park with pleasant weather, so visitors can enjoy a fresh walk. A drive around the Moti Magri Road will help you to see the whole lake from outside. One island is a great picnicking place and also has a cafe. The cafe is special and must – see as it is made in the shape of a boat!

History of Fateh Sagar Lake

The place was first hollowed out on orders of the ruler Maharana Jai Singh back in the mid-sixteenth century. The lake was later mushed up due to heavy waters or rains by 200 years after 1687. Connaught Damn is a famous historic structure built in 1889. This is how the Lake Fateh Sagar was then formed by Maharana Fateh Singh. So, the lake was given the name – Fateh Sagar Lake in his honour.

Hariyali Amavasya Mela

This festival is celebrated to welcome the monsoons. It is held at Fateh Sagar Lake during the months of August / September every year. This festival is celebrated over three days in fun & frolic. A variety of cultural events are held during this Hindu calendar month of Shravan. It is also known as Green New Moon Fair as the festival welcomes the heavy monsoon season.

World Music Festival

Several tourists from around the world visit here to participate in the music festival held for three days at the Fateh Sagar Lake. This is held in the month of February as the Lake Fateh organizes several domestic & international events. Music artistes and performers from around the world as well as from all over India give great performances at the World Music Fest. This may be singing, poetry in singing form, or instrumental music but they would definitely mesmerize your soul.

How to Reach Fateh Sagar Lake

From any part of the city, you can book a cab to reach Fateh Sagar Lake. If you want a fancy ride at a cheaper price take a ride in a tuk-tuk. Otherwise, there are paid state – run cabs or paid private cabs that run throughout the city to drop you off nearby Lake Fateh Sagar. You can also visit this international tourist destination by taking a luxury tour on the Palace on Wheels train.
